Estimates bleeding risk for people on, or being considered for, a blood thinner (anticoagulant) — used alongside the CHA₂DS₂-VASc score, not instead of it. A high HAS-BLED score is a reason for closer monitoring and addressing modifiable risk factors, not automatically a reason to avoid anticoagulation.

A high score here does not automatically mean you shouldn't take a blood thinner — for most people with atrial fibrillation, the stroke-prevention benefit still outweighs the bleeding risk. It's meant to flag modifiable risk factors (like uncontrolled blood pressure, combined antiplatelet use, or heavy alcohol use) worth addressing, and to prompt closer monitoring rather than avoidance.
